ROYAL TONER, HEAD OF OYSTER CONCERN

Rockville Centre, LI, May 15 – Royal Toner, head of one of the nation’s largest oyster-growing companies, died today in Mercy Hospital after a short illness. He was 65 years old and lived at 111 Oxford Boulevard, Garden City.

Mr Toner was president of the Greenport Oyster Company, and of Lester & Toner, Inc, also at Greenport, sales agents. The company had its headquarters on Peconic Bay where, under some sixty to eighty feet of water, it has 6,000 acres of oyster beds.

As a youth, Mr Toner was a stenographer in New York and served for a short period as secretary to the late John Wanamaker, the department store executive. Mr Toner later worked as a bookkeeper in the Fulton Fish Market. At the age of 21 he began to buy and sell oysters.

Surviving are his widow Clarice; two daughters, Mrs Aimee Masset and Miss Patricia Alice Toner; a son, Royal Jr; a brother James A and a sister Mrs Rose Grover.
